A place of rest in places of unrest, a place of intimacy in the shame-stricken city center - this is what Rhein Bad is meant to be. Inspired by the sheltering, rough atmosphere of the ship's belly and the Roman influence along the Rhine, the idea of a thermal bath is born, which reaches into the heart of cities along the Rhine and is designed to become a place of contrast to the hustle and stress of the city. This principle is nothing new: even more than a thousand years ago in ancient Rome, the thermal baths in the city center and the related bathing culture were an integral part of the day and a social hotspot for the young and the old, the rich and the poor.

Man and Nature, Ebb and Flow - Gezeiten Raum is a place that becomes an immersive experience for the visitor. The power and superiority of nature are made tangible in direct encounter, in a space that merely provides a framework for nature and is entirely defined by it.

The mobility of the ship has a twofold benefit: To get thermal water, Rhein Bad travels not only from town to town but also from spring to spring. The map shows some of the thermal springs along the Rhine. When Rhein Bad continues its journey after a few weeks, the water can be exchanged either along the way or directly on site.

The partially half-height walls on the upper floor provide an open feeling of space and also allow a view of the river along the corridor. To provide a tranquil atmosphere in the bathrooms of the lower floor the basement bathrooms, the pools are carefully carefully arranged to prevent views from the corridors.

The outer walls of the boat hull with their support structure are left open and uninsulated in order to preserve the existing structure and the associated special atmosphere of the space. Since the ship's hull is cooled by the Rhine from the outside on the one hand, but heated on the inside by the high air temperature of the thermal bath on the other, condensation occurs on the ship's wall. This contrast is deliberately created and celebrated: The condensation flows along the wall into a drainage channel flush with the overhang of the column structure, which clearly separates the existing structure from the new one.

The idea for the material "Rheinterrazzo", developed for Rhein Bad, emerged from the question, which material connects the regions along the Rhine. Rhine pebbles are a colorful potpourri of these regions, each of which tells its own story about origin and geology. Cast and polished into terrazzo in the manner of the ancient Romans, each stone displays its own unique texture and coloration. Because the pebbles are harder than the cement, each stone protrudes slightly and is polished smoother,

which is very pleasing to the touch. Terrazzo is ideal for the monolithic architecture of Rhein Bad, because the individual segments are already fully processed as prefabricated elements only need to be installed. Due to its structure and the adequate sanding, the material offers the necessary slip resistance. Since terrazzo is cast, heating pipes can be installed in both the walls and the floor to keep the thermal bath warm.
